WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating after a man who was shot in the neck called 911 to report the crime.

They say it happened around 3:45 Sunday morning near Vance Street and Rutledge Drive. Police say when they got to the scene, a man was found lying on the ground, bleeding from his neck.

Police say the victim told them he was walking when he passed by a home in the 2800 block of Vance Street.

That’s where police say he heard a man yell profanities at him, before the suspect ran up and shot him. The suspect then ran back toward the home at 2804 Vance Street, according to police.

The victim told police his shooter is described as a black man in his 20’s, who is balding, has dark skin, was wearing a red jacket and carrying a dark colored gun.

Neighbors say they heard one shot, and then saw several police cars. Officers searched the house that the victim told them the suspect ran towards after he shot him, but they say they couldn’t find anyone matching the description.

The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. There’s no word yet on his condition.
